Daniel was greatly appreciated both by Nebuchadnezzar (King of Babylon) and then by Darius (king of Medo-Persia) who ruled later. However, many prominent men disliked him, Daniel. because of his right behavior before God and the King. So they tricked the King (Darius) into signing a document that stated no one could call upon their God except to call upon the King (Darius) for 30 days. If they did they shall be caste into the lions den to be killed. When Daniel heard about this he immediately opened his windows and began praying to God. The Prominent men told the King who knew he could not go back on a signed document-yet it greatly troubled him as to how he could save Daniel.
Daniel was taken and thrown into the lion's den that day. The king was restless through the night and in the morning he ran to the lion's den saying: "And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God." (Daniel 6:20-23 KJV) Yet Paul talks of others in the Old Testament: "And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect." (Hebrews 11:36-40) Let us have hearts like Daniel and others to serve the true living Holy God. (image by Briton Rivere 1890 accessed on Wikipedia-pub dom.) |
