Another explanation of the scriptures was that there was a miraculous light that occurred that was unique to the present constellations. The wise men from the East (how many?) would have been aware of the Hebrew Scriptures as they would have read about Daniel the Prophet when he was in Babylon. They .would then also have had access to scriptures that would herald the arrival of the King of the Jewish People. When it, the star, occurred they followed it.

2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
