The aorta, the major blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart and into other smaller blood vessels is exquisitely designed. The interaction between collagen (c), elastin (e), and proteoglycans (p) gives a structure that can absorb the surge of blood as it leaves the heart's ventricle and allows for the blood to be conveyed to smaller blood vessels further from the heart. The physical properties of the aorta allow it to maintain the necessary physiological blood pressure to carry the blood, with nutrients and oxygen, into the very distill parts of the body. There are many known mutations that have occurred in either collagen, elastin, or the proteoglycans or even in the processes to form the walls of the aorta, but ALL THESE KNOWN OBSERVED MUTATIONS ARE HARMFUL.
