The typical story of the National Park Service is that the area known as the Painted Desert Petrified Forest area was once a dense upland forested area with streams meandering through it. Trees occasionally died and fell into the stream. But the more realistic assessment of the area is consistent with a massive catastrophic regional flood. This could have been part of the Noah Worldwide Flood.
There are layers of clay and ash laden strata that are conformed on top of each other consistent with volcanic activity and sequential water slurried deposition over a wide area-at least 4 states. Large petrified logs such as seen in the picture above are roughly aligned parallel with their root bulbs facing in the same direction. consistent with massive significant flow and not a meandering stream. Many of the logs have been stripped of bark and show evidence of limbs being torn off. The root bulbs show evidence of the root structures being torn off. In some other areas are log jams with logs oriented in mixed positions and compacted together.
The very process of petrification argues for a watery rapid burial in a rich silica solution with various minerals. Many logs contain intact growth rings and often these show compression before any sort of degradation occurred and after significant rapid overburden was laid down.
