The height change from Nazareth to Bethlehem is about +1411 ft This is a fairly straight gradual climb through hills. The other longer diverted route: Nazareth to Sea of Galilee is about -1854 ft. down. From the Sea of Galilee at Jordan River to Dead Sea at Jordan River is about -609 ft down. From the Dead Sea to Bethlehem is +3858 mostly up a step winding road with no water till the top is reached. Contrary to some popular views it was not a problem for Jews to travel through Samaria during the time of Jesus Christ. He and the disciples traveled through Samaria several times.

Conclusion: When Joseph and Mary had to go to the Roman Census to register in Bethlehem it is more probable that they went on the direct route as Mary was term with the baby Jesus. It probably still took them a week.
